Singapore Under 21s Head to Vietnam

SINGAPORE, 16 September 2008: Terry Pathmanathan’s Singapore Under-21 team is set to compete in the International Under-21 Football Tournament – Vietnam Youth Newspaper Cup 2008 which will begin on 20 September at Hue City, Vietnam.

Singapore is in Group B together with Iran and Myanmar while Group A consists of Thailand, Malaysia and hosts Vietnam.

Singapore’s first match is against Iran on 20 September followed by the game against Myanmar on 24 September.

The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals which will be held on 26 September. The 3rd/4th placing and final will be held on 28 September.

Most of the players called up ply their trade in the Prime League except for Irwan Shah, who is a regular with the Young Lions.

NFA U-18 players, Hafiz Sujad and Izwan Mahbud who have appeared for the Young Lions this season, have been called up to the squad together with players from the Prime League squads of Balestier Khalsa, Geylang United, Home United, Gombak United and SAFFC.

This is the second edition of the tournament which is organised by the Vietnam newspaper, Than Nien News.

Singapore competed in last year’s round robin tournament, finishing third.
