Persela's Samba

Lamongan will never be known as a football hotbed yet today their football team sits atop the ISL looking down on more established names like Arema, Persik and Persib. And this despite starting the season with a 5-2 tonking by Persib.

Much of Persela's progress, I hesitate to use the word success because they have nothing, is down to Brazilian import Marcio Souza now in his third season with the side from the north coast of East Java.

In his time with the club he has netted 35 goals including 9 so far this campaign and many of them have come from free kicks just outside the area.

The 28 year old Brazilian striker gets to keep company with compatriot defender Fabiano Beltraine who returned to Persela for a second spell after spending a season with Persmin. Fabiano who is 26 spent two seasons with Persela before trying his arm, or leg, in the north of Sulawesi.
